Don’t Mind the Dust…

Per advice given to me in a comment on my blogspot blog, I’ve decided to go ahead and do a couple of posts over here on my wordpress blog to see how I like it. I admit, so far, it’s not too bad. It kinda reminds me of Tumblr – only without the reblogs.

I am having a problem deciding on which theme to use. There’s this one, which is okay, and then there’s another one that’s meant for wedding blogs, but it’s oh so pretty!

Maybe next week I’ll give that one a try, and then we can have a vote on which one people prefer.

So, sadly, I haven’t gotten as much writing done this week due to the fact that I’ve been playing around with WordPress so much. And when I wasn’t doing that, I was starting my son on baby food, and cleaning up the mess he made from said baby food. He loved it, but per baby tradition, he ended up wearing more than he actually ate.

However, even thought I didn’t write a whole lot, I did mull over the boyfriend problem that I’m currently having with the Descendants some more. I think I’m going to do it – I’m going to hack the boyfriend out of the picture. He really is pointless, especially since he’s not even Vivian’s real love interest! The stepmom I’m thinking of bringing in will actually drive the plot forward, especially when she shows up again in book 4.

But I don’t want to go in to any more detail because, spoilers sweetie.

It’s Wednesday today, so you know what that means! WIPpet Wednesday, where we share a snippet from whatever we are working on that some how coordinates with the date. Since today is January 28th, 2015, I’m going to share 13 paragraphs from chapter 6 (2+0=2-15=13, and 2-8=6).

This takes place a little bit after Vivian wakes up in the field. She finds out she’s not alone – the girl she encountered in the temple is there with her. The girl blames her for the fact they ended up in the middle of nowhere, but Vivian thinks she’s crazy.

They had to be on Earth, because she was able to breathe, and there were poppies. She twirled it between her fingertips as she walked.

Unless other worlds had poppies.

But there weren’t other worlds. It wasn’t possible.

Right?

She remembered the temple. While the statues had been faintly romanesque, there was something different about them too. The robes they had worn were loose, but didn’t look like any toga she had ever seen before, and while the hairstyles were elaborate, they were straight where the hair she had seen on pictures of roman statues was normally curly.

Then there had been those carvings on the ground – carvings that had reminded her of the stone on Audra’s porch. From the little she remembered of history, Romans had conquered the Celts. She doubted they would include the artwork of a defeated people in their temples.

And the sky she had seen briefly had been unlike any sort of sky she had seen before. There had been no sun or moon, and she hadn’t recognized the any of the stars she had been able to glimpse through the brief parting of the smoke.

Maybe other worlds were actually possible.

But if they were, how did one travel through them? Using spells like the girl she was following claimed?

Her mind balked at the idea, refusing once again to accept anything that had happened in the past few hours. There was only their world. Magic wasn’t real. It was just a plot device used in fairy tales for kids.

How else could she explain what had happened though, and how they had ended up where they were now? It certainly wasn’t through any sort of science.

The answer came to her suddenly; drugs. She had been drugged and then dumped out here. The temple was just a hallucination and the girl was another victim.

But why kidnap them and dump them way out here?

Yay! All the familiar wordpress buttons. 🙂 I hope it works out for you. It’s a lot easier to interact, I think. As for themes: I use one that’s meant fora photo blog. I think you should go with whatever you think is pretty. 🙂

Nice snippet. I love your character’s unwillingness to believe what she’s seeing. (That’s a weak point for me. Working on it. 🙂 I think you pull it off nicely.)

      Thank you!

So far, I’m actually liking it quite a lot. I have the app on my phone so I get a heads up about comments, whereas the Blogger app doesn’t do that. In fact, I don’t know if I’ve gotten a comment on blogger until I go to the blogger website.

Good excerpt. The conclusion she comes to–that she’s been drugged–sounds reasonable. I’m getting that your character has a really good eye for detail. The things she noticed about the statues and the designs on the temple, not recognizing the star patterns, etc, all point to that. The only thing that confused me was the line in the first paragraph, “She twirled it…” I couldn’t figure out what the “it” was in this sentence.

Thank you! Yeah, the it was the poppy. I try to edit these things when I copy and paste the snippet over so they’re less confusing. I’m sorry I forgot this time! We’ll just blame it on adjusting to wordpress 😉

Yessssss, WordPress! *pushes all the buttons* And there’s no law that says you can’t change your theme every once in a while. It took me three or four tries to find the one that suited me.

Your character is so much more observant than I am!

That’s true about changing themes. I think I changed my theme at Blogger a few times before I found a wallpaper someone had made and learned to do a little html editing.

Now that you mention it, and now that I think about it, Vivian is very observant. That’s totally a character trait I wasn’t planning on for her!

I love WordPress. I now have a paid site, but it’s still WordPress.

I love her reactions—noticing the details, trying to tie it to what she knows, and still in disbelief. I love that last part.

I had the same reaction to wordpress. I’m just going to fly through themes anytime I create a new graphic, probably. 😀

Side note: Was that a River Song style “Spoilers sweetie” or am I just overly hopeful?

AND: I like this already! I love all the rational she goes through, yet her observations don’t line up…. Good mental flow. I’m interested to see where this leads.

Styles and layouts are horribly fun things to play with, aren’t they? I’m glad you’re enjoying it over here.

I’m definitely intrigued by this world now–or hallucination, whichever she decides it is. She’s a very savvy lady, I love how she works through the scenario and makes her own conclusions… but there’s still that element of doubt. It’s brilliant.
