It’s Lonely Up Here…

Earlier this summer I mentioned that there might be a strike at Hubby’s work in a few months. The union contract is coming up, and so far negotiations between the union and the company are iffy at best. Let’s just say there’s been lots of drama that has made me nervous enough that I’ve started looking for a job. However, there aren’t many openings that would allow me to be home in time for Hubby to go to work, and putting Boyo in daycare isn’t an option.

So Hubby decided to get a second job so we could have a bit more of a cushion in case the worst happened.

He’s gone to work for a local theme park and is helping their carpentry and special effects departments get ready for the park’s annual Halloween event. We’ve both worked there before (in fact it’s where we met) so it’s a bit strange for him to be back there again. Almost like things have gone full circle again. In fact he told me the other day that when he and a few of the guys he knew from before were standing around at lunch the other day, one of them commented that it felt like they had gone back in time to five years ago.

The downside of this is that he’s gone almost all day long. He gets up at 330am, is out the door by 4, and doesn’t get home from his other job until almost 1230 the next day. He sleeps for three hours, and then the cycle repeats again. We try to talk on his lunches, and we face time at dinner so that Boyo can see him, we’ve also been going down to Hubby’s day job to have a dinner time picnic once a week, but it’s been hard. Really hard. We keep telling each other that it’s for the best, but I don’t think I ever want to go through this again.

It’s almost over though.

Next week, the various build teams will be switching to nights, so Hubby can go in after his normal job is over (currently he’s on second shift at his day job, and the build teams will be doing what is considered swing shift). Then he can come home, get some more sleep, and we’ll actually be able to spend some time together before he goes of to work again.

And then after that it’s only three more weeks till the event opens.

As a result of all this craziness, I haven’t been getting as much writing done this past week. I’ve been trying to, but with Hubby working two jobs, that means all the household chores have fallen to me and it’s caught up with me. I’m not nearly as exhausted as hubby, but still, I’m fairly worn out enough that I just want to veg during my down time. I’m so worn out that when the Boyo had an incident earlier this week (read here for more on that… warning, it’s not for the squeamish) I actually had a laughing fit that was so bad I was crying. And I haven’t had one of those in AGES. I’m so tired I can’t even read. I tried to continue The Remnant Chronicles earlier this week, but I couldn’t get past the first page of The Heart of Betrayal. Not because it’s bad, but just because I couldn’t focus.

This is going to make starting school next week interesting.

Enough of me kvetching though. It’s WIPpet Wednesday time! I was hoping that I would have more Hobbie and Anagah to share, but they’ve been silent, and the other fanfics I work on from time to time would require too much explaining (and one is WAY too hot for this blog) Sadly, the bits I have from the Descendants are too spoilerific and honestly I’m not to happy with them at the moment. However, I do have eight sentences from the Undying Ones for you today (since today is the 17th, 1+7=8)

Mattie was careful to avoid the guards, rising early before they began their patrols, and stayed late into the morning, after everyone was asleep. She had to dart from shadow to shadow, the sunlight nipping at her heels, but in the end it was worth it. She flipped through the old pages, the dust falling away as her breath washed over the words. Reading opened up whole new worlds for her, worlds where there wasn’t any madness, or hunger, or cruelty. They told her stories about far away lands that were made up of vast deserts. Forests larger and vaster than the one beyond the ravine. Cities full of people who didn’t try to claw each others faces off. Instead they had balls and got married and had children – things that she would never experience.

Poor Mattie. Being cursed really puts a crimp on things.

I know the feeling of that place where a spouse is always working. We went through that too, early on in our marriage. It’s not easy, but we got through, and I hope you will too.

I want to scoop Mattie up and make it all better.

Oh, and I’ve got some sizzling fanfic too! It won’t be seen here, but I sure do love writing it!

Your family is going through a rough times with your hubby having two jobs. I hope that it all ends soon and he is able to just have one job. Getting three hours of sleep is not enough. I am a person who needs six hours of sleep and then I’m okay. Sometimes I’ve written through the night and got up after sleeping three hours so I would not sleep all day, but that is hard. It is hard on the body. So, here’s hoping there is NO strike.

As for your snippet, I like Mattie’s desires to be what she thinks normal means as she reads. Maybe, that will break the curse.

I love this line so much. It’s a wonderful WIPpet – you’re awesome for being able to fit in writing at all!

What a great snippet. I’m right there with Mattie, loving the feel of the pages and the way the stories can transport you.

I’m sorry for all the extra things you’re having to deal with. I too know what it’s like to work weird hours and not have enough time together. Hoping things calm down after the event is over.

Ooh! A snippet from the Undying Ones! (I confess, I have missed that story a lot )

This must be the summer of double jobs for our spouses… My hubby just went through two weeks of that himself. Nothing as trying as you all are dealing with, but challenging enough. Many hugs and best wishes.

I’ve missed it too. But I got stuck on it pretty badly and couldn’t figure out where to go. The outline wasn’t helping, and then I lost the outline, so the story just sat there. Hopefully I won’t run into any more problems /knock on wood
