Choice…

This is the final week of my first real estate class, and the mid term for my third class (the second one finished two weeks ago, and the fourth one doesn’t start till the end of the month).

Despite all the studying I’ve been doing for the tests, I have been able to get some writing done this week. One of those ideas that just refused to let me go popped into my head on Wednesday. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to write it down until Saturday. That big of a delay usually means that what I am able to get down is horrible compared to the original idea. Too much time has passed, so the exact wording and flow is lost to the aether. To my complete and utter surprise though, the scene came out okay. Better than okay, actually. In fact, I’m inclined to think it’s better than the original idea!

So, since it’s WIPpet Wednesday, I’m going to go ahead and share the snippet with you.

This idea fits in with the space colonization idea I shared way back here. Basically the girl character who wants to name the world Janus has been rescued/kidnapped (it depends on who you talk to) by a member of a tribe who live on the planet. The tribe is descended from humans were sent there many many years before (centuries possibly) but communication was lost between whatever government they came from, and the original settlers, so it was assumed that they were lost. However, the planet has something valuable (vital minerals perhaps?) and so a new group of settlers is being sent to the planet.

That’s about as far as I’ve gotten in developing the plot since The Descendants and the pen name project are my priorities.

This snippet takes place after the girl and the tribesman have been traveling together for a bit. Unfortunately, neither character have names yet – so I’m sorry for any confusion that may cause.

Anywho, there are 16 paragraphs because it’s 2016.

He laughed. “That’s not how it’s supposed to be.”
“What do you mean?”
“You’re supposed to be with someone because you want to be with them not because some computer tells you to.”
“But how is the human race supposed to survive then? The most compatible people must be paired together that way the next generation is strong enough to thrive here. The system takes all our strengths and weaknesses into consideration and calculates which people will have the best possible outcome.”
“There’s no fun in that.”
“This isn’t about fun. It’s about the future.”
“The human race will continue on without some damn algorithm interfering.” He pointed at their steeds. “Look at them. They’ve evolved to live here.” He gestured at himself. “So have the original settlers, or else I would not be talking to right now.”
“But if it can make things better… make us better–”
“Enough about the damn computer.” He took a step forward, crowding her against the wall of the cave. For the first time since he had dragged her away from base camp, it occurred to her that more than just her life was in serious danger here. Under his intense scrutiny, she could feel goosebumps breaking out over her skin, and her stomach twisting and tying itself in knots upon knots. If he was aware of the effect his proximity was having on her, he gave no sign of it. Instead he continued with his little speech about how her people were getting everything, even this most basic part of life, wrong. “You should be with someone because you want to; because you find them attractive both physically, mentally, and emotionally, because you enjoy their company, and you can’t imagine life without them there beside you. Because your heart, your soul, wants them as a partner, not because someone tells you that you must. And it doesn’t matter if it’s for a few short minutes in a field, or if it’s for the rest of your life, as long as it’s your choice.”
She licked her lips. “Then take me back.”
His blue gaze dropped briefly to her mouth before flicking back up to her eyes. “No.”
“Why not? It’s my choice. You said yourself that it doesn’t matter as long as it’s my choice, and if this is my choice, then–”
“It’s the wrong choice, and you damn well know it.” He cut her off. “You’re just afraid.”
“Of what?” She glared at him. “I have been dragged all over this planet by you. I’ve faced bandits, wild animal attacks, and your oracle and all her hocus pocus.”
He responded by kissing her. One hand cupped the back of her head as his lips claimed hers with a tenderness that surprised her. She had expected him to be as fierce and determined as he was in every other aspect of his life, not gentle or soft – for his lips and fingers were exceptionally soft, even though the rest of his body was covered in lean hard muscle. Little licks of his tongue against her mouth encouraged her to open up beneath him and he eagerly tasted her, introducing her in the process to a whole new side of kissing that she wasn’t aware of.
So this is what her friends on the ship had been sneaking off to do during their off shifts, she thought. She had never understood the fascination, but then no one had ever caught her attention quite like he did.
She tentatively kissed him back, reaching up to stroke his cheeks lightly. She was terrified that by doing so, she might somehow break the spell currently surrounding them — however, she was equally afraid of what might happen if they kept going. She could feel him pressing against her, his heat radiating through the layers of clothing separating them. The scent of him was nearly overpowering, musky and rich, so very very different from the sharp sterile world of the ship. The sensations combined were doing things to her that she didn’t even know was possible, now her skin was tingling and aching all at the same time.
He broke away, his hands slipping down to her shoulders as he did so. “That is how it should be.” He said, his voice rough and raspy. “And that is what you are afraid of.”

I’m sorry if it was triggering. That was not my intent with the scene at all.

Once I finally get a chance to finally work on this project (again the pen name project and Descendants come first) I hope to flesh him out a bit more so that he’s still very alpha, but not in an asshole Christian Grey way.

We’ll see. Right now she’s a fish out of the water, and no one on her ship is even remotely like him. But I have other things I need to focus on, so it may be awhile before I get to work on this. Unless another scene pops into my head again 🙂
