Last week, the supervisor who is over Boyo’s therapy texted me asking if I wanted to bring Boyo in for an extra appointment. They had a training class that they needed kiddos for, so they can show the new incoming therapists how they do things. I said sure, because it would get us out of the house for a little bit.
So I loaded Boyo into the car, drove down to the office, and was promptly told after checking in that I could go get coffee if I wanted to. Normally one of us is always there, so it was a bit strange to find out that I wasn’t needed for the training class. But Boyo was completely entranced by the toys they had pulled out, and the supervisor (who Boyo adores) was there, so I took advantage of the situation to go get some lunch and get caught up on some reading.
Come to find out they do this once a month or so. The trainer asked if we would be willing to come back again, and since Boyo enjoyed it so much (he was so upset when he had to go), I went ahead and said sure.
Next time I’ll make sure to pack up my computer, or get a blue tooth keyboard for the ipad, so I can get some writing done while they all run around together.
I knocked out another chapter on The Descendants this week. I’m currently trying to figure if I should turn the girls time at the Roman baths into a separate chapter, or let it go. There’s honestly not a lot that happens at the baths. I could rework it so that they try to run for it, but that doesn’t add to the story very much. Unless you know who decides to make an appearance.
And of course, as soon as I even think about it, he decides that that’s a great idea.
I swear this guy will be the death of me.
Another thing that will be the death of me is Tesni’s name. I’m thinking about changing it yet again – this time to Elise. Maisie was another contender, but I already have enough characters with M names in the series. We’ll see.
It’s Wednesday again, so that means it’s time for another WIPpet snippet!
Last week I shared a bit from The Descendants that featured Tesni and Vivian realizing that the Herculaneum they were in, wasn’t the Herculaneum they thought it was.
This week, I’m stepping away from The Descendants to share something different. After binge watching Ascension on Netflix this week, I was inspired to write a snippet that I’ll probably expand on later. It features two characters chatting about their new home that their ship is due to be arriving at shortly. Since today is the 3rd of August, here are 8 paragraphs:
“Why do they always call it Kepler 452b? Can’t they find a better name for it?”
“Like what?”
“I don’t know. Juno, or Liber. Maybe Vesta, since it’ll be our new home. Just something not so scientific. We’re surrounded by science. Have been all our lives. It’s time for something different.” She turned back to the screen. “God, I can’t wait to get down there. To feel air on my skin that isn’t recycled. To dip my toes in a lake or an ocean. Do you remember those?”
“Of course.” Even though he really didn’t. He had been too young when they had started to really remember things like oceans or clouds. All he remembered was his mother’s stories, and the pictures in the computer system. “You know, just because we’re reaching the end of our journey doesn’t mean that that is going to change. There’s still going to be plenty of things to do. There will be tests to run, crops to plant. We’re not going to step down that gangplank to find things ready for us. We have to make it our home.”
“All the more reason to give it some sort of an identity.” Deciding on a name, she announced it. “Janus.”
“A two faced god? I think Vesta would be better since she was the goddess of home.”
“He’s not just a two faced god. He’s the god of transition. Of beginnings and endings. Since this is the ending of our journey, and the beginning of our new life, I think it’s perfect.”
“Yeah, well, try to get the higher ups to agree to it.”

I like your snippet. It sounds like they are starting over, branching out into something totally new for them. The names for the new place, Janus which means transition or change or Vestra, which has a meaning of stability could direct the direction of your story, depending upon which name you use.

It would. I’m leaning towards to Janus though. Something different and not as obvious as Vesta.

Like the last line. he doesn’t sound too sure that will happen

He’s probably right, but we’ll see where it takes me when I have a chance to work on it.

Nice your son enjoyed his playgroup! Definitely bring stuff for writing next time–it’ll be a win-win for you both.
As for the snippet, let me add my voice with Pat’s here… the way the ship is named will definitely have an effect on how the characters perceive their world and their places in it. It’ll guide the story… and if everyone has their own secret names for the ship…. Hm!

It’s actually a planet – not a ship 🙂 I’m leaning towards Janus. But we’ll see. This is something that’s going in the back back back way way back burner till later.

Ooh, I really like this conversation. That’s one thing that really interests me about stories where the human race is going off to settle other planets and that sort of thing, that there would be people on board that either don’t remember or have never actually set foot in green grass or an ocean or anything like that. I think you conveyed that really well.

I love this. And, as the mother of an Annalise who chooses to go by Lise these days, I’m rather fond of the idea of renaming Vesni Elise, too… =)
I’m in favor of Janus. Definitely conveys a sense of movement and possibility.
And my favorite part of all this? Happy Boyo; happy mom. =D ❤
