Well, we had a problem…
The Friday after Thanksgiving, I did a factory reset on my computer in order to fix it. As soon as it was done I went about trying to reinstall Windows 10 only to realize that our internet was too slow to handle the download. Hubby and I thought maybe it was our router, so we went out and bought a new one, set it up…
… and completely lost our internet connection.
Turns out our old router was fine. The wires going to our house, however, weren’t doing so hot. One week, three phone calls, and two techs later, and we were finally able to get the issue resolved.
To add insult to injury, our water was out from 9 to 5 during that same time while the city worked on the water lines. So I couldn’t take out my frustrations regarding the internet on cleaning. On the upside, I was able to catch up on my reading, so that’s nice. I’ve finally finished Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray (which had a cool little cameo of a character from another series she wrote) and I’m about half way through Forged in Blood part 1 by Lindsay Buroker. I’ve also been chipping away at Drums of Autumn when I’m waiting for my phone or IPad to charge – I read a lot of ebooks – but I confess I’m reading that out of sync. I’m reading all the Brianna and Roger parts first, then the Jaime and Claire parts.
I’ve also spent a good portion of my time brainstorming about my projects since I can’t actually work on them (I backed them all up to my google drive before the computer reset, and since we don’t have internet, I can’t download them or word to edit them) and I’ve come to a conclusion about The Descendants.
The time travel has to happen.
I feel a bit foolish saying this after making such a big deal about how it needed to be changed. I made the decision to stop the time travel plot a few months ago because I was afraid, and I realize now that that was foolish. Time travel offers so many possibilities, especially in the last book of the series, that are just too big and juicy to ignore.
I’ve also figured out a way to tweak the beginning so it starts off more in the thick of things, instead of being such a slow build up with more info dumps than you can shake a stick at.
Sadly The Undying Ones is still being uncooperative.
Anywho, it’s Wednesday, the internet and computer are finally fixed, which means I can finally post a WIPpet Wednesday Update.
Today is the 7th, so here are 7 paragraphs – short ones – from the second book of The Descendants. To set this up, Vivian is a little paranoid about touching people due to something that happened during her adventures. The gentleman who helped her out is trying to prove to her wrong.
“Humor me.” He wiggled his fingers, but kept his palm flat and ready for her to trust him.
Vivian sighed and gently placed her hand in his, ready to snatch it back at the faintest sign of a tingle. However, he quickly tangled his fingers with hers, holding her palm firmly against his rough calloused one. When she tried to pull her hand away, he pressed his other hand over the top of hers, trapping her. “See? You’re fine.”
“For now! Let go, before…”
“Before what?”
“Before it happens.”
His thumb stroked the side of her hand. “Listen, today when you slipped, I held on until you were steady again, and absolutely nothing happened. It’s been longer than that now, and you’re fine. I’m fine. I don’t doubt that something happened, and that’s why you flinch when anyone gets too close. But, I think you have a bit more control over it than you think you do.” He finally released her hand, his fingertips tracing over the lines of her palm as he did so. He held up his hands for her to see. “See? All in one piece.”

Good luck with the time travel! I have WIPs like that, where I determine one way is going to work, only to discover it should in fact be something else. Ditto the opening. I often find I have to tweak so that I’m not info-dumping in the first chapter.
I like this scene, and how the man gently points out that when she’s got other things on her mind, the touching doesn’t bother her. He’s not too pushy, which is good.

Hope your internet and water problems are solved. That’s no fun to be without either. And I love Lindsay Buroker’s books!
As for the snippet, really enjoyed it and intrigued as to what happened to make her so worried about touching.

We have a well, and, on occasion, we lose our water when the pipe freezes or the pump loses its prime. No fun.
I’m happy your internet is fixed, and that the “down time” led to good insights. I love the time travel angle, and I’m glad you’re keeping it.
As for the snippet, I like this guy and the way he helps Vivian relax about things. I’m wondering if he’s the same guy who’s helped her before, because, if he is, he’s very good for her. =)

Gosh, what a lot of hassle. 😦 I hope you’re back up and running on all engines.
I love the interchange in the snippet.
